Immune System Gone Awry
Autoimmunity describes a malfunctioning immune system whereby the immune system goes awry and attacks the body. A healthy immune system targets harmful invaders such as viruses; however, when healthy tissue is mistaken for something more sinister, autoimmunity can cause a broad range of illnesses, known collectively as autoimmune diseases.
Type 1 diabetes, for example, is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system destroys the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. Other common autoimmune diseases include rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and multiple sclerosis (MS), to name a few.
